Homebuyer Tax Credit Q&A
How does the IRS define the term "first-time homebuyer"? In this case the IRS defines "first-time homebuyer" as a buyer who has not owned a principal residence during the three-year period prior to the purchase.
When do I need to purchase to qualify? If you buy a home between Jan. 1, 2009 and April 30, 2010, you will qualify for a tax credit - as long as it is your primary residence and you meet the simple requirements.
Are there any restrictions on the property I can buy? It must be a single family home that will be your principal residence for three full years. Also, your tax credit is limited to 10% of the purchase price of the home you buy. In other words, if you purchase a home for $80,000 or more (and satisfy the other easy to meet guidelines) you will receive the maximum credit.
What are other requirements to qualify? All U.S. citizens who file taxes are eligible to participate. For complete program details logon to: http://www.federalhousingtaxcredit.com/
How do I apply for the credit? Taxpayers should use IRS Tax Form 5450 to claim the homebuyer tax credit.
Does the credit have to be repaid? No. Unlike a similar tax credit passed in 2008, this tax credit does not have to be repaid to the IRS. However, if you do not live in your home for a full three years, repayment may be required.
